No. 15 Huskers Fall in OT at No. 20 Iowa
Iowa City – Emily Cady produced 19 points and a career-high 18 rebounds, but No. 15 Nebraska suffered a 78-72 overtime loss at Carver-Hawkeye Arena on Monday night.

Tear’a Laudermill added 19 points, including 17 after halftime, but the Huskers had their five-game overall winning streak snapped to slip to 15-4 overall and 5-3 in the Big Ten. It also snapped Nebraska’s eight-game winning streak in the series with Iowa. The Hawkeyes improved to 16-3 overall and 7-1 in the Big Ten.

Theriot finished with 15 points and five assists, while Brandi Jeffery added eight points, seven rebounds and three steals for NU. Hailie Sample managed six points and eight rebounds including a crucial layup with 1:23 left to cut a three-point Iowa lead to 60-59.

Samantha Logic led Iowa with 22 points, seven rebounds and eight assists, while Ally Disterhoft added 20 points and 13 rebounds. Bethany Doolittle scored all 12 of her points after hafltime to help the Hawkeyes, including six points early in the overtime.

Nebraska led for the game’s first 36 minutes before back-to-back jumpers from Melissa Dixon and Logic gave the Hawkeyes a 58-57 edge with 3:50 left. A Disterhoft shot with 2:29 left pushed the margin to 60-57, before the Huskers rallied.

Nebraska and Iowa went to overtime tied at 61 with huge plays by both teams late in regulation. Theriot hit a jumper with 4.5 seconds left to give Nebraska a 61-60 lead. But freshman guard Whitney Jennings came free on the length-of-the-court inbounds and appeared to have an uncontested run to the rim from the left side. Theriot came over and blocked the shot but was called for the foul with 1.3 seconds left. Jennings missed the first free throw but made the second to send the game to overtime.

NU led by as many as 10 points on several occasions in the game, but were never able to shake the Hawkeyes who kept the lead within seven points throughout the majority of the first 36 minutes.

The Huskers led on the road against one of the Big Ten’s top offensive teams despite hitting just one three-pointer in regulation. For the game, NU closed 2-for-10 from long range, including a Theriot three with 9.5 seconds left in overtime. For the game, the Huskers hit just 39.1 percent of their shots from the floor, but did connect on 16-of-18 free throws.

However, after holding Iowa to its lowest first-half point total of the season with 21, the Huskers allowed 40 points on 58.6 percent (17-29) shooting in the second half. In the overtime, Iowa hit 5-of-8 shots from the field, while adding a pair of putbacks. The Hawkeyes outscored NU, 17-11, in overtime.

Nebraska matched Iowa on the glass with 42 rebounds, but lost the turnover battle for the game, 18-17.

Cady carried the Huskers to a 28-21 halftime lead with a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds in the first 20 minutes. Jeffery added six big points and three rebounds after missing NU’s game at Wisconsin with a minor injury. Sample added four points on 2-of-2 shooting while grabbing seven rebounds for the Big Red in the opening half. Rachel Theriot also managed four points, three assists and late first-half block.

As a team, Nebraska hit just 37.5 percent (12-32) of its first-half shots, including 0-for-5 three-pointers, but never trailed and led by nine points on several occasions after opening the game on a 10-1 spurt in the first 4:30. NU outrebounded Iowa, 24-20, in the first half and won the first-half turnover battle, 8-7.

Logic led Iowa with six points and six rebounds, while Kali Peschel (5) and Chase Coley (4) combined for nine points off the bench to help the Hawkeyes stay within striking distance at halftime. Iowa hit just 25.8 percent (8-31) of its first-half shots, including 2-of-8 threes.

The Huskers return to Lincoln Thursday to open a two-game home stand by taking on Illinois. Tip-off between the Big Red and the Fighting Illini is set for 7 p.m. Tickets are available now on Huskers.com, with no national television broadcast of the game available.
