Through faith, determination, and a relentless belief in the power of Historically Black Colleges and Universities, he has built a national platform that highlights the talent, culture, and legacy of HBCU athletics. His mission is simple yet powerful: show the world that HBCUs matter.

During our interview, Williams shared his story—from humble beginnings in South Georgia to creating one of the most meaningful things for HBCU student-athletes in the country.

From South Georgia to a National Vision

Williams’ story begins far from the bright lights of national sports events. Born and raised in the small town of Tifton, Georgia, Williams now lives in Atlanta, where the HBCU All-Stars organization is headquartered. But his journey began long before the organization existed.

For 17 years, Williams worked as a basketball coach, mentoring young athletes and guiding them through the challenges of college athletics. During that time, he developed a deep understanding of the talent within HBCU programs—and the lack of recognition those athletes often received.

Then in October 2019, something changed. “After 17 successful years of coaching,” Williams told AMPS Magazine, “God placed an amazing vision in my spirit to show the world that HBCUs matter.” That moment became the spark that would launch an entirely new mission. Williams stepped away from coaching to pursue what he describes as a calling—creating a national platform that would give HBCU student-athletes the exposure, recognition, and opportunities they deserved.

Building the HBCU All-Stars Platform

The result of that vision was HBCU All-Stars, a Black-owned sports marketing and media company dedicated to supporting Historically Black Colleges and Universities.

Williams describes the mission with two powerful acronyms: EAR and ORR.

Exposure

Access

Recognition

and

Opportunity

Resources

Results

These six principles form the foundation of the organization’s work. “Our goal,” Williams explained, “is to make sure hardworking, talented and ambitious HBCU students, student-athletes and coaches receive the recognition they deserve.” Through media coverage, events, networking opportunities, and professional development, the organization creates a pathway for athletes who might otherwise be overlooked. And at the center of that mission is the HBCU All-Star Game.

A National Stage for HBCU Talent

Each year during college basketball’s biggest weekend, the HBCU All-Star Game celebrates the best players from historically Black colleges across the country. The event features athletes from four major HBCU conferences:

Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC)

Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC)

Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA)

Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC)

Independent HBCU programs also participate, including institutions like Tennessee State University and North Carolina A&T State University. In total, nearly 48 HBCUs are represented in the All-Star experience. The 2026 game will take place on April 5 at Indiana State Fairgrounds Coliseum in Indianapolis. Williams describes the event as “A show of force and solidarity,” bringing together the HBCU community on one national stage.

The Work Behind the Game

While fans see a single night of basketball, Williams says the preparation is lengthy. “It’s a year-long process,” he told AMPS Magazine. “As soon as one game ends, we begin planning the next.” Since launching the event, the All-Star Game has traveled across the country:

2022 – New Orleans

2023 – Houston

2024 – Phoenix

2025 – San Antonio

The 2025 event was particularly historic because it featured the first doubleheader, highlighting both men’s and women’s basketball. Behind each event is a massive collaborative effort involving community leaders, HBCU alumni, local organizing committees, corporate sponsors, and volunteers and interns. Williams emphasized that the event could not exist without the support of the communities hosting it. “A lot of people don’t see the behind-the-scenes work,” he said. “But it’s truly a team effort.”

A Faith-Driven Mission

Throughout our conversation, one theme became clear: faith drives Williams’ leadership. He credits both God and his family for helping him bring the vision to life. One of the first people he shared the dream with was his wife, Kya Williams, who now serves as the organization’s Chief Financial Officer. Williams explained that pursuing the vision required tremendous sacrifice. “I had to tell my wife she would have to hold things down personally, professionally, and financially,” he said. “Because this was something we believed in.”

Together, they built the foundation of the HBCU All-Stars organization. Their commitment transformed a vision into a national platform.

Changing the Culture of College Basketball

The impact of the HBCU All-Star Game reaches beyond one event. It is helping change the conversation about HBCU athletics. Williams pointed to a statistic that highlights the problem. There are currently hundreds of players in professional basketball, yet only one active NBA player from an HBCU background. That player is Javonte Cooke, who participated in the first HBCU All-Star Game in 2022 before reaching the professional level. Meanwhile, there are zero players from HBCUs in the WNBA, despite the existence of National Basketball Association and Women’s National Basketball Association rosters filled with elite talent.

Those numbers reveal a major gap in exposure. “That’s why this event matters,” Williams said. The All-Star Game creates a stage where professional scouts, media, and fans can witness the talent coming from HBCU programs. It is also why the event includes a Pro Day Combine, giving athletes the chance to perform in front of NBA scouts and evaluators.

More Than Basketball

While basketball may bring people together, Williams stresses that the event is about much more. The HBCU All-Star experience includes several community initiatives, including:

scholarship fundraising

a college admissions fair

community health events

food pantry support programs

social justice and civil rights panel discussions

The organization also hosts an awards ceremony honoring community leaders and supporters of HBCU education. One of the most impactful initiatives is the HBCU All-Stars Foundation, a nonprofit dedicated to helping students pursue higher education. Through scholarships and financial assistance, the foundation supports both current HBCU students and high school seniors who dream of attending one. “We want young people to see what’s possible,” Williams told us.

A Celebration of Culture and Community

The HBCU All-Star experience also celebrates one of the most iconic elements of HBCU culture: the band. Marching bands from HBCUs are known nationwide for their energy and performance style, and they are a key part of the All-Star Game festivities. The event also includes a fan fest featuring local businesses, vendors, and community organizations.

In partnership with the Indy Black Chamber of Commerce, more than 100 small businesses are expected to participate in the event’s marketplace. Williams describes the environment as a full cultural celebration. “This is about Black excellence, Black history, and the HBCU experience,” he said.

Inspiring the Next Generation

During our interview, Williams also spoke directly about inspiration. He acknowledged that many entrepreneurs and community leaders face obstacles when trying to build something meaningful. “Anything worth doing is going to require sacrifice,” he said. Williams hopes that the success of the HBCU All-Stars movement encourages others not to give up on their dreams. He believes collaboration—not competition—is the key to progress. “We have to help each other,” he said. “That’s what makes movements like this possible.”

The Future of the HBCU All-Star Movement

Looking ahead, Williams hopes to expand the reach of the event globally. His goal is to ensure that HBCU athletes receive the same opportunities and recognition as players from major Division I programs. But the broader mission is even bigger. He wants the HBCU All-

Star Game to serve as a gateway for education, mentorship, and career development. “This is about building pipelines,” he explained.

Pipelines to:

professional sports

graduate education

leadership roles in business and community development

Ultimately, Williams hopes the platform continues to elevate HBCUs and inspire future generations.

A Movement That Matters

At AMPS Magazine, we left the interview with one clear impression: Travis L. Williams is not just organizing a basketball event. He is leading a movement. Through the HBCU All-Star Game and the HBCU All-Stars organization, Williams has created something that celebrates culture, champions education, and opens doors for student-athletes who deserve to be seen. What started as a vision in 2019 has grown into a national stage for HBCU excellence. And if Williams has his way, the impact of that vision is only just beginning.

As he told AMPS Magazine:

“Whenever we have the opportunity to tell our story and highlight our HBCUs, we are showing the world that they matter.” For the thousands of student-athletes whose talent is now being recognized on a national stage, that message could not be more important.

At AMPS Magazine, we often meet individuals who are passionate about their work.
