“It was an even match tonight, but that goal early in the second half killed us,” head coachJohn Bluem said. “We regained momentum after they scored and I thought we had a pretty solid first half. But to give up an early goal again in the second half hurt us tonight. It’s just a little lack of concentration. Our team has no quit and we’ll continue to play hard in every single game. I have no doubt we will show up against Michigan Saturday night and play as hard as they can.”
TWO SAVES BY SIEGFRIED EARLY ON
Siegfried denied two shots by Syracuse’s Tajon Buchanan in the 17th and 18th minutes, respectively. Siegfried came off his line at 16:53 to make a sliding kick save from 15 yards out. After the first corner by the Orange, Buchanan came up with a rebound but was denied again, this time from the near post by Siegfried at 18:27 on another kick save.
ORANGE SCORE FIRST
Syracuse found the first goal of the game at 25:01 when a lobbed through ball by Johannes Pieles found the foot of Buchanan, who buried a chip shot into the far post. Adnan Bakalovic was also credited with an assist. Siegfried collided with Buchanan on the strike and left the game due to injury. He was replaced by freshman goalkeeper Xavier Kennedy at 25:01.
OHIO STATE STRIKES RIGHT BACK
The Buckeyes found the equalizer quickly against the Orange just 30 seconds later following the team’s first corner of the match.Abdi Mohamed sent in the service and found freshman Mitch Bergman, who headed a shot towards the left side but was denied by a diving save by Hendrik Hilpert. But Nate Kohl was in perfect position to score off the rebound with a left-footed finish into the back right of net at 25:38 for his second score of the season. At half shots were 6-4 in favor of the Orange. Syracuse had a 2-1 lead in corners in the first period.
SYRACUSE REGAINS THE LEAD
The Orange took a 2-1 lead right out of halftime when Lukas Rubio scored his first goal of the season from the top of the 18 into the bottom right of net at 49:32. The assist went to Jonathan Hagman.
SECOND-HALF CHANCES
· Joshua Jackson-Ketchup came into the match in the second half and fired a shot from the top of the 18, but his strike to the lower left of goal was denied by Hilpert at 61:39.
· The Buckeyes began to move numbers forward in the final 20 minutes. Mohamed had a free kick from the far side drop low, but was saved by Hilpert from his knees in the 71st minute and knocked away.
· Mohamed and Jackson-Ketchup each had shots from distance sail high over the bar late in the second half.
